After graduation from F.S.U. I taught 3 years before marrying on June 3, 1967. After marriage we moved to Fort Hood, Texas, for 2 years where Paul served in the Army. After his discharge June 1969 he enrolled in graduate school at F.S.U.
50th Reunion
Wasn’t it the BEST to grow up in the 40’s and 50’s then graduate from Columbia High School in 1960?!!! I remember crying at our graduation, thinking life would never be the same, and I would never see some of my lifelong friends ever again.
We have seen many changes in the world over the last 67 years. Thankfully, one of the best is email so that now I can reconnect with some of my lifelong friends more easily.
Many of you may not know or remember that Gloria Hunt Shields and I roomed together at North Florida Community College our freshman year and that Paul and Gary roomed together at FSU. Conveniently, they would hitchhike to Madison from Tallahassee to see us pretty often. I could tell a lot of funny stories about our capers if space allowed. Suffice it to say, I have such fond memories of both Gloria and Gary. I am sure they would have LOVED being at our 50th reunion.
After my freshman year at Madison, I transferred to Florida State and graduated with a B.S. in Elementary and Early Childhood Education degree. I taught my first year at Melrose Park Elementary, third grade, before moving to Orlando teaching second grade. After Paul and I married, he was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas as a lst Lieutenant in the Army. I taught third grade in Killeen, Texas and life was good. We enjoyed meeting other army officers and non-officers, learning to play bridge, traveling for those two years. I often said that I cried when I got to Texas because I hated it and cried when I left because I loved it.
We moved back to Tallahassee for Paul to get his master’s degree and I taught Kindergarten and that was the only job available. I was a little skeptic of that age, but it was certainly a God thing because years later after moving to Tampa, via Pensacola, a job became available at my church, First Baptist, Brandon, to teach kindergarten from 9 – 12. By this time we had a son, Brett and a daughter, Keri. My part-time job for the next 28 years allowed me to be home when they were home and life was good.
I retired in May ’05, after teaching a total of 35 years. At present, I enjoy volunteering at Center Place for the Arts in Brandon, going to my Bible study class, babysitting my grandaughter once a week, reading, traveling and most of all sleeping until I am through!! No more alarm clocks!!!
I love my life and feel very blessed to have made it this far. Of all my accomplishments, I have to say that I love being married to my husband Paul, being a mother to my children and now a grandmother. Once again, life is good.
