50th Reunion
After graduation, I attended Coffeyville Junior College in Coffeyville, Kansas on a football scholarship; along with James Vining. In 1961, was honored with the Wayne Hittle Award, presented to the outstanding sophomore lineman; was First Team Jayhawk Juco All-Conference center; Junior College Gridwire All American, and captain of the team which finished the season second in the conference with a 9-2 record.
After the 1961 season, I transferred to Wichita, Kansas to play for Wichita State University. Started as offensive center first year at Wichita where I was one-of-three Shockers placed on the all Missouri Valley Conference team. After suffering a career-ending brain concussion before the start of the 1963 football season, I remained at Wichita State and was a student assistant coach during my senior year.
After graduating from Wichita State in 1964 with a B.S. degree in Education, I, along with James, joined the coaching staff at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska as offensive line coach. Also coaching at Hastings, was Bill Parcells who has since coached for the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants.
I received my draft notice during the 1965 football season; joined the army but was able to defer reporting for duty until after the football season. I served two years in the Army, reaching the rank of sergeant.
In September, 1968, I resumed my coaching career as head coach at Oxford High School in Oxford, Kansas. I received my Master’s of Education Degree from Wichita State University in 1971. That year (following a blizzard), I moved my family to Macclenny, Florida and taught and coached for Baker County High School. After two years, I moved to Mulberry, Florida as defensive coordinator with the Mulberry Panthers for Jimmy Morgan (class of ’59).
In 1974, I returned to Macclenny, Florida to coach and remained there teaching history, government, vocational special education, and work experience. I retired in 2003. I met my future wife, Sharon Bradford, while attending Coffeyville College. We have been married for 48 years and have two children, Anne and David.
1n 2004, I went back out to Coffeyville, Kansas and was inducted into the Coffeyville Junior College Football Hall of Fame.
Since retirement, we enjoy spending our summers in North Carolina. I have taken up a hobby of rock hounding and lapidary work. My wife and I work together making jewelry. We are now enjoying the fruits of those years of labor.
